Foundwood
Several years ago, musician, artist and scientist, Fred Pribac, started crafting vessel flutes, also known as ocarinas, in the style of European instruments with a predominantly Tasmanian theme. Using a pinch pot technique, Fred describes the process as almost doodling or whittling in clay. It’s all very organic, the clay determines the form and the character of each instrument, The skill is in crafting the fipple so there is a clear pitch within the range of notes produced. But why Foundwood? Fred also crafts wooden banjos and ukuleles.
